What is Iyengar Yoga?

trikonasana.jpg

Yoga is the Sanskrit word for "union", providing us the possibility to balance the body, mind and spirit via its practice. B.K.S Iyengar (1918 to 2014) designed the use of props to aid students in their practice of postures (termed asanas in Iyengar yoga) to ensure the accessibility of the discipline, no matter what a student's physical or mental ability.

‘Yoga can be practised by anyone, whatever one’s state of mind or health‘

B.K.S. Iyengar

All Iyengar Yoga Instructors must first have done a minimum of 6 years of Iyengar Yoga practice. Ginnie currently has over 14 years and has spent the past 4 years learning how to teach the Iyengar Yoga method, gaining over 400 hours of teaching experience.

All Iyengar Yoga students are not only taught how to teach asanas (poses) but also the philosophy and science behind yoga. This is done via a rigourous mentoring scheme set out by the Iyengar Yoga UK and certified by them. High standards are maintained through ongoing training and regular professional development and teachers commit to teaching only Iyengar yoga to ensure the commitment to the B.K.S. Iyengar discipline is maintained.
